A black velvet Bentley. For fair weather climes only, I assume.

Hi, I’m an engineering student enrolled at Oconomowoc High School. I’m currently working in the PLTW capstone course, EDD (Engineering Design & Development).
At this point in our project we need to find people who are either experts or experienced in our project’s relative fields. Our project is centered on designing a fully functional universal cup holder that has the highest potential for eliminating spills within automobiles. Even if you aren’t employed or currently working with cars, your input is valuable and will help us with our justification.
If you don’t mind my asking, what are your thoughts and do you agree with some of these statements?
Some cup holders are too shallow for proper functioning.
Some cup holders have poor placement. (Too close to electronics or get in the way.)
Some cup holders are made of poor materials and have fragile designs.
Some cup holders can’t hold enough varying container sizes.
Some cup holders hardly work at all.
Any input regarding automobile cup holders and their flaws or strengths is greatly helpful. My partner and I would also appreciate knowing what your profession is or how you’ve come to be interested in automobiles.
Thanks for your time.

The ship was rocking and swaying sickeningly as Ford and Zaphod tried to wrest control from the autopilot. The engined howled and whined like tired children in a supermarket.
“It’s the wild colour scheme that freaks me,” said Zaphod whose love affair with this ship had lasted almost three minutes into the flight, “Every time you try to operate on of these weird black controls that are labelled in black on a black background, a little black light lights up black to let you know you’ve done it. What is this? Some kind of galactic hyperhearse?”
The walls of the swaying cabin were also black, the ceiling was black, the seats - which were rudimentary since the only important trip this ship was designed for was supposed to be unmanned - were black, the control panel was black, the instruments were black, the little screws that held them in place were black, the thin tufted nylon floor covering was black, and when they had lifted up a corner of it they had discovered that the foam underlay also was black.

If you don’t mind my asking, what are your thoughts and do you agree with some of these statements?
Some cup holders are too shallow for proper functioning.
- This is a very specific question. Many cars have great cup holders, some not. My cup holders are awesome. One of my cars doesn’t even have cup holders.
Some cup holders have poor placement. (Too close to electronics or get in the way.)
- True, for some cars.
Some cup holders are made of poor materials and have fragile designs.
- True, for some cars.
Some cup holders can’t hold enough varying container sizes.

Some cup holders hardly work at all.

From the thumbnail, I thought that was edited in MS paint.

I too have been on the quest for the ultimate cupholder. One that can hold all containers in all situations, is self-leveling and will never spill, and can bring my drink into optimal range when I need it, as well as uncap it as needed.
That’s why I got married. Now I never road trip alone. Problem solved.

As much as I complain about how boring the car is, the Nissan Cube has the best cup holder layout of any car I’ve ever driven. It has 9 total within the car.
One to the left of the gauge cluster that is made to hold a drink with a handle (or a drink w/o a handle, plus a pair of sunglasses), Three in front of the shifter, one in the rear of the center console, one in each of the four doors.
If you want to see cup holders done right by a manufacturer, that’s a good place to start looking.
As for my Corvette...it has one tiny, extremely shallow cup holder. However, I wish it didn’t even have that, as it implies that I allow people to drink any kind of beverage inside the car.

Does it come with one of these?
![]() 04/26/2018 at 15:37 |

Yeah, the questions are a bit non-specific in some ways, but I appreciate your responses. For now I just need a general consensus that a problem or shortcoming does exist.
At this time our primary goal is to make a prototype that can be used to adapt cup holders with poor depth.
If you don’t mind my asking, what car model and year is your car without cup holders? And what year and model for the car with amazing cup holders?
Your input is very helpful, thanks!

They’d better not let anyone “make whoopee” on that car. The resulting fluids will absolutely mat and ruin velvet.
Or so I’m told.

Probably has Alannah Miles on it, though.

Fair enough! :)
In my current stable, I have:
2005 smart fortwo passion coupe
2005 smart fortwo passion cabriolet
2012 smart fortwo passion coupe
2016 smart fortwo edition #1
The 2012 has the awesome cup holders (they don’t get in the way and the rubber holds things of various sizes in securely) while the 2005 cabriolet doesn’t have any cup holders at all. I’m not sure why it doesn’t, though I reckon cup holders were not factory standard for its intended market (Germany). Both 2005s are European imports never intended for sale in the US.

First of all, you shouldn’t be eating or drinking in a car. Stop it.
The main flaw is that they do not keep the drink upright. A gimbal would be a good solution to this problem. Construction of a flexible and sturdy container holder to attach to it is outside my skill set (I’d ask an ME).
I work in software and I enjoy operating many types of vehicle.

I’d love to have a black paint that absorbed light as much as that bentley, however I can’t imagine all that absorption is good in a hot day.
